MOST COMMON MISTAKES MADE BY MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT CLIENTS IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA

The most common mistakes San Francisco motorcycle accident clients make include the following.

Mistakes motorcycle riders make before an accident:

  • Failure to be seen -- Motorcycle riders should be conspicuous in their gear.   They should wear colors that make them easily visible.  For example, if the rider is dressed all in gray, the day is gray, and the pavement is gray, it is going to be hard to pick them out.  The driver may look and not even notice them.

  • Failure to note any obstructions or road hazards -- Motorcycle riders should be aware of visual obstructions like shrubbery or parked cars, hazardous driving conditions, cracked and broken pavement, or anything wrong with the road.  Motorcyclists should learn to ride the correct way.  They can take a MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) approved course.  Whenever possible, bikers should ride with somebody else and let the more experienced rider take the lead.

Mistakes motorcycle riders make after an accident:

  • Moving the motorcycle -- Many riders instinctively run to their bike and move it out of the way.  They should let someone else pick up their two-wheeled vehicle and move it to the side of the road.

  • Failure to ask for witnesses -- Too many riders fail to ask for witnesses, get names, exchange phone numbers and obtain other pertinent information that is necessary for their case.

  • Failure to get pictures -- A telephone with a camera in it will work perfectly fine and most likely someone at the scene of the accident will have one.  Pictures should be taken of all vehicles at their point of rest. If there is any other evidence on the roadway, such as scrapes and scratches, debris, hazardous roads, etc., pictures should be taken of that as well.  The more pictures, the better.

  • Failure to call the police immediately -- The police should be called right away.  The police will fill out an accident report/record, help with witnesses, measurements, take official statements, and perform other legal tasks.

  • Failure to get transported to the Emergency Room -- If the accident victim is hurt, they should ask for transportation.  The police will call for an ambulance and assure that you are transported to the hospital in a proper and timely manner.

  • Failure to chart the point of impact and the point of rest.
